City Lyric Opera produces a mix of recitals, main-stage opera performances, and festivals of multi-disciplinary repertoire.

As an artist-led company, we uniquely understand the desire of many artists to produce their own work, but due to economic or physical barriers, many are unable to devote the needed time and energy to their own artistic dreams. In response, CLO spearheaded an initiative during the 2022-2023 season to prioritize the production of recitals, chamber operas, and festivals in partnership with local NYC artists.

Each Fall, NYC-based artists are encouraged to send their programming ideas to be produced in CLO’s following season. Submissions are reviewed by a panel and selected based on the following criteria:

  1. Scope: Does the scope of the project fit within the Organization’s knowledge base, resources, and budget?

  2. Accessibility: Is the project accessible for audience members who have not experienced opera or classical music?

  3. Theme: Does the project’s content or subject matter align with City Lyric Opera’s mission and artistic vision for each season’s programming?

  4. Musicianship: Does the project showcase the artist’s talent to the best of their abilities?

  5. Diversity: Does the project reflect the greater NYC community and its inhabitants?

First-round selections meet with the audition panel via video chat to receive feedback and facilitate conversation before making the final selections. City Lyric Opera typically selects between 8 and 10 submissions per season.
